DJ Biography
Dean first discovered his passion for music when he would sit in his room listening to his favourite tracks from his parent’s record collection. Growing up to the sounds of Kool and The Gang, George Benson, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan and D Train fuelled his thirst for real music with soul and groove.
The first form of dance music to catch his attention was the sound of drum and bass back at the turn of the millenium. Listening to pirate radio stations and collecting tape packs from raves such as Best of British, Slammin’ Vinyl and One Nation led him to discover his love for serious sub weight and disturbing synths. He got his first pair of decks on his 16th birthday and would religiously spend any spare moment he could down at his local record shop, spending all of his little earned cash to build up his collection.
Whilst at college in 2002, he was introduced to a sound which would change things for good – ’Grime’. Grime was a new sound coming out of London at the time and Dowee was firmly gripped by its rawness. Witnessing the type of atmosphere this sound could create had a profound effect and it was from this point on that he would concentrate on pushing this new sound to as many people as possible. Many projects followed; including DVS Recordings and Eskibeat.co.uk. However, it was in 2005 when he was asked to join the Grime collective known as ’Disturbed’ as their DJ that he would begin to get recognised. With regular air play and special guest appearances on London’s leading urban radio stations such as Rinse FM, Kiss FM and the BBC’s 1Xtra, Disturbed began to spread their unique sound to a wider audience.
It was also around this time that Dowee had discovered another new scene in London which was closely associated with Grime known as ’Dubstep’. Paul Rose’s early Hot Flush mixes were a firm favourite on the iPod and when Skream’s ’Midnight Request Line’ dropped at the end of 2005 he was sure that this was the direction he wanted to take with his DJing. Over the next couple of years, with the death of the grime scene, his record bag soon started to fill up with the likes of Digital Mystikz, Scuba, Burial, Kode 9 and many more producers who were creating this fresh and innovative sound.
In January 2007 he was introduced to Techno by his good friend Rossko, it was at after parties in and around London that Dowee started to network with like minded DJ’s and producers which led him to spend the rest of the year playing out at some of London’s most notorious underground clubs such as The Cross, The Key, Aquarium, Public Life, Medicine Bar, Masque Bar, Cosmo Bar and Corsica Studio. It was during this time that he carved out his style and truly fell in love with all things minimal.
